Persian Ibex Hunting in New Mexico

How did Ibex end up in New Mexico?

In 1970, the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMDGF) released 15 Persian ibex from Iran in the Florida Mountains in southern New Mexico. This initial transplant of ibex has since grown into the only sustainable hunting population of free-ranging ibex in the United States. In 1974, the first Persian ibex hunts were offered to the public, starting one of the most sought-after hunting opportunities in the country!

Where in New Mexico can you find Persian Ibex?

The Persian ibex is an agile species that lives in the most remote and rugged cliffs and peaks of the Florida Mountains. The rough terrain, coupled with the astounding eyesight of the ibex, makes for one of the most challenging, but rewarding, hunting opportunities New Mexico has to offer.

Guided Ibex Hunts in NM

Here at Radiant R Outfitters, the challenge of pursuing the elusive ibex in NM is one of our favorite hunts. Opportunities for ibex hunting with us include rifle hunts, muzzleloader (open sight) hunts, and archery hunts for those looking to take the challenge to the next level. Our hard-working guides have achieved excellent success rates over the years.

What to Expect on an Ibex Hunt in NM

Hunting Persian ibex is not for the fainthearted and requires long days of hiking up steep and rocky terrain to where the ibex live. You can expect a spot-and-stalk style of hunting with an array of different approaches to get the job done. Because of the great eyesight of the ibex and their “cagey” demeanors, archery hunts are most challenging and require hunters to be accurate with their equipment out to 80+ yards. There are two available archery hunts for ibex in New Mexico, one in October and one in January. The muzzleloader (open sight) season for ibex lands in February and requires the same grit and determination as the archery hunts. Muzzleloader shots range from 100 to 500 yards. Lastly, there is the coveted once-in-a-lifetime rifle ibex hunt during the month of November.
