Guided Ibex Hunts in New Mexico
NM Persian Ibex Hunting
In 1970, the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMDGF) released 15 Persian ibex from Iran in the Florida Mountains in southern New Mexico. This initial transplant of ibex has since grown into the only sustainable hunting population of free ranging ibex in the United States. In 1974, the first Persian ibex hunts were offered to the public, starting one of the most sought-after hunting opportunities in the country!
The Persian ibex is an agile species that lives in the most remote and rugged cliffs and peaks of the Florida Mountains. The rough terrain coupled with the astounding eyesight of the ibex, makes for one of the most challenging, but rewarding, hunting opportunities New Mexico has to offer. Here at Radiant R Outfitters, we enjoy the challenge of chasing these elusive critters and have had a lot of success on previous hunts. Opportunity for ibex hunting with us can range from high caliber rifle hunts, muzzleloader (open sight) hunts and archery hunts.
Hunting Persian ibex is not for the fainthearted and requires long days of hiking up steep and rocky terrain up to where the ibex live. You can expect a spot and stalk style of hunting the ibex with an array of different approaches to get the job done. Because of the great eyesight of the ibex and their “cagey” demeanors, archery hunts are most challenging and require hunters to be accurate with their equipment out to 80+ yards. There are two available archery hunts for ibex in New Mexico, one in October and one in January. The muzzleloader (open sight) season for ibex lands in February and requires the same grit and determination as the archery hunts. Muzzleloader shots range from 100 to 500 yards. Lastly, is the coveted once-in-a-lifetime rifle ibex hunt during the month of November.
